Agastyamuni

Situated on the banks of Mandakini River, Agastyamuni is a town at a height of 1,000 meters. The town is dedicated to one of the most revered sages in Indian mythology - Rishi Agastya. Agastyamuni is also an important destination for the Char Dham yatra as it has a helipad from where helicopter tours of the Char Dham are undertaken.

History and Mythology

There are a number of different legends related to this place. According to one such legend, it is believed that two demons who were called Aatapi and Vatapi were terrorizing the people who lived here. The hapless residents had asked saint Agastya for help who killed both the demons. Later saint Agastya is believed to have established his Gurukul (school) at this place.
